Q: How Does Cosmetic Teeth Whitening Work?
A: The teeth whitening gel is applied to the surface of your teeth. The gel, in combination with an special LED light, will remove most stains built up on your teeth. The science behind it occurs with a gentle oxidisation action that removes stains and whitens your teeth back to their original colour. As our Teeth Whitening Gel is broken down within a 15-minute period, oxygen acts on the stained organic deposits, which oxidises them into a white colour. This process brings both the intrinsic and extrinsic parts of the tooth closer to its natural pearly white.
Q: How long does a treatment take?
A: Our most effective results are seen with a 45 to 60 min appointment. Refresh or follow-up appointments are normally recommended as 30 min sessions. Basically, the longer the session, the better the results.
Q: What results can be expected?
A: This depends on each individual and the extent of discoloration, generally from 6 up to 14 shades lighter is a typical result. The more stained your teeth the more dramatic the result should be.
Q: Which one of the 4 lengths of appointments do I need - 15, 30, 45 or 60 min?
A: We breakdown the sessions based on what you need to get the very best result.
15 min ‘SINGLE’ session: The 15 min gel application is mainly for a refresh after you have been previously. It will remove any recent staining and refresh your teeth a few shades back to their natural colour.
30 min ‘DOUBLE’ session: This is what most clients prefer as a 6 to 12 monthly renewal of their white smile. The 2 x 15 min gel applications work well to oxidise and remove the stains from your teeth. We typically see 6 to 10 shades whiter results in the double session. You are in and out of the clinic in just 45 minutes.
45 min ‘TRIPLE’ session: This is our most popular service.
The 3 x 15 min gel applications maximise the whiteness achieved by continually going deeper into the staining that exists as we work through the removal of the build-up present on your teeth. As we re-apply fresh gel each 15 minutes it allows the gel to work at the deepest stain levels achieving the almost maximum result.
This service takes just 1 hour in total time you would be in our clinic.
Typical result are from 6 to 12 shades whiter in just 1 hr.
60 min ‘QUAD’ session: This is our premium service with the best results of all.
The 4 x 15 min gel applications get the very best results as we have 4 fresh gel applications that repeatedly work away to provide you with the very brightest white results possible. We see from 6 up to 14 shades whiter results here typically.
Q: Is teeth whitening safe?
A: We offer the latest whitening gel approved for use in Australia. We have a very hygienic service procedure. Our gel is gentle and safe, problems are extremely rare. Teeth whitening is safe for crowns and veneers although these will only whiten back to the original colour they were made by your dentist.
Q: Is teeth whitening suitable for everyone?
A: Not everyone. We do not perform teeth whitening procedures on pregnant or lactating women. We only recommend teeth whitening for children over the age of 16. Parental consent is required until the age of 18. If you currently have a gum disease or require dental work, we recommend addressing those issues with your dentist prior to having a teeth whitening appointment.
Q: How long will a teeth whitening treatment last?
A: Teeth will maintain their whiter appearance in the range of 6 months to 2 years. It all depends on your dental hygiene routine and your diet / lifestyle. Re-staining will occur faster if you do not maintain a twice a day brushing routine and smoking, coffee, tea, red wine, soft drink and darker coloured foods will all reduce the longevity of your whitening results. Basically, if you think of your teeth as a white shirt. Things that stain a white shirt can also stain your teeth over time.
Q: What are the qualifications of the consultant doing my teeth whitening?
A: All certified Gloss teeth whitening consultants have undergone a comprehensive written and practical training with a development program specifically for our Gloss teeth whitening service. Backed up with many hours of supervised real-life appointments before being certified as a teeth whitening professional. Our training program is currently gaining international recognition in the US and England. As such we are recognised and covered for all insurance requirements in Australia.
Q: Is teeth whitening suitable for smokers?
A: Smokers will definitely benefit from a teeth whitening treatment. In the case of smoker teeth whitening may need to be done more than once a year to maintain the result as re-staining will occur faster.
Q: Can I get my teeth whitening while pregnant or breast feeding?
A: No. We do not perform teeth whitening procedures on pregnant, breast feeding or lactating women. Consult your doctor if you have concerns about being ready.
Q. How many times per year can I have an in-chair teeth whitening treatment?
A: The ADIA recommend having a teeth whitening treatment up to maximum of 3 times per year. Performed this often however you may only need 15 to 30 min refresh sessions for maximum results. The results achieved will most likely not be as significant as your first appointment if there is minimal time since your prior visit. We expect approx. 2-10 shades whiter may be achieved compared to your last appointment when done regularly.
Q: Why is a whitening treatment done in multiples of 15 minutes instead of all at once?
A: After 15 minutes the peroxide gel applied to your teeth has ‘peaked’ its performance. This means it has completed the reaction for that application and very little stain breakdown will occur from this point onward. This is why we re-apply gel after we do a progress check in 15 min increments. A new gel application renews the maximum oxidisation that is occurring to remove the stains.
We offer up to 4 x 15 min sessions within the one appointment.
Q: What’s the benefit of using an LED light with the teeth whitening gel?
A: Using an LED teeth whitening light accelerates the teeth whitening gel, causing the gel to react faster when breaking down stains. What does this mean for you? You can achieve the same result that would take normally 12-14 hours just with whitening gel alone in a 1-hour treatment. The use of the LED accelerator light speeds up the process of the molecular breakdown of the whitening gel which makes the oxidisation of the stains occur more rapidly.
This process is highly recommended compared to home whitening kits where you need 1 hour a day for around 14 days to get the same results we achieve in a single 1 hour in-clinic session.
Most people with home mouthguard kits get bored before they see the results they really desire.
Q: How do I get super bright white teeth like celebrities or the TV Ads?
A: Your teeth will only whiten to the colour they were originally grown. Teeth whitening is a stain removal process and results are excellent for removing built up stains back to your original colour. If your base colour is not originally bright white, then the teeth whitening process may not be able to get you the teeth colour you desire.
The super bright white teeth seen on TV are either digitally enhanced or dentist produced veneers and not natural teeth. Fact is, no teeth whitening professionals (even dentists) can make your teeth whiter than your original teeth colour. It is only possible with veneers or with digital enhancement in press ads.
Q: I want my teeth whiter, when can they have another treatment?
A: There are no exact waiting periods between appointments required. 24 to 48 hours after your first appointment your teeth, gums and lips, will be rehydrated and your saliva coating will be back to normal on your teeth. We recommend 1-2 weeks gap as a minimum for a follow-up visit would be the shortest time to wait.
We do this a often for bridal parties in the month leading up to weddings.
Q: Does teeth whitening work on crooked teeth?
A: Yes. Our teeth whitening is still suitable for teeth of all shapes and sizes. Our teeth whitening pen is great for applying gel to those hard to reach places.
Q: Will teeth whitening work on grey teeth?
A: It depends why the teeth are grey. If it is from surface staining due to diet then yes. If it is intrinsic (inside the tooth’s structure below the enamel) then teeth whitening will not help with this particular problem although it will still whiten the stains on the enamel. Intrinsic stains are generally caused from medication like tetracycline or nerve damage to the tooth.
Q: What if you have bad tar and nicotine stains on your teeth?
A: As this is a physical substance on the surface of the teeth, tar will have a harder time being removed by any form of teeth whitening. (even by dentists). Some of the tar may remain. The tar may even whiten; however, as it is highly porous it will only take a short time for the build up to appear again. This is only the case in a small number of smokers as most smokers get sensational results to remove the stain build up that is visible on teeth.
Q. Should teeth whitening be done by a dentist?
A: Teeth whitening is purely a cosmetic whitening procedure and not essential to be performed by a dentist. Our Gloss teeth whitening consultants are highly trained and qualified in professional teeth whitening procedures. They are also trained to identify any possible issues in and around the mouth, teeth and gums.
The products used are as effective as those used by any dentist. All our products are Australian compliant and produced to exceed the highest standards.
Q: Can I get teeth whitening done while I have braces?
A: No, we do not recommend it. Wait until the braces come off and then have teeth whitening done as it will remove the stain buildup and give an even white colour to your smile.
Q: If you are allergic to peroxide can you use a non-peroxide whitening treatment?
A: We would not recommend it as most bleaching agents break down into elements including peroxide as they work. It is better to be safe.
Q: Can I use a Non-peroxide product if I have a gum disease?
A: If you have gum disease it is best not to have a teeth whitening treatment until the gum disease is rectified. We recommend you visit your dentist first.
Q: Can the client use lip balm or Vitamin E before the treatment?
A: It is a good idea for you to use a lip moisturiser, or our preferred vitamin E especially in the colder months when the skin is dry, as it can help prevent cracked lips. Just ensure you don’t get any on your teeth or the whitening gel will not be able to penetrate as effectively as we would like.
Q: Are fluorosis spots caused by teeth whitening and how long will it last?
A: Teeth whitening will not cause this. The colour variation you may see will always fade, generally in a few hours and it is unlikely it will last longer than 24 hours. It takes a few hours for your saliva and teeth to rebuild the natural coatings after a teeth whitening treatment, and this will cause any possible signs of fluorosis to fade back into the natural colour of your teeth.
Q: What if I find the cheek retractors are uncomfortable?
A: The cheek retractors can be uncomfortable but there are options to help. We provide various sizes and will ensure it is as comfortable as possible. Once in position, it allows easy access to your teeth and protects the lips and gums from contacting the gel while it is working on removing the stains.
Q: What happens if you have a reaction to the treatment?
A: We have never had a serious reaction from our gels. The strength of the peroxide is within legal limits for non-dental practitioners. In the unlikely event treatment is required our labeling is compliant with regulations which include a phone number for the Poisons Information Centre – 24 Hour Telephone Advice Line 13 11 26
Q: Does Teeth Whitening Damage Your Enamel?
A: No, when used as recommended all of our gel products are 100% safe and will not damage or weaken your tooth enamel.
